Agricultural Science Foundation

Agricultural Science Foundation, a non-profit voluntary organization was established in the year 1981 by Late Shri K H Patilji, the then Honorable Minster for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Government of Karnataka.

The Foundation is dedicated to social, educational and economic development of rural and urban poor. The Foundation is working in fragile agro-ecological regions of the northern part of Karnataka State. It’s focus is on natural resource management, promotion of organic farming practices, building peoples institutions by organizing them in to Self Help Groups and need based interventions for improving the livelihood of resource poor families.

Events

Technology Week Celebration

We organized Technology Week in Gadag district, Karnataka. Inaugurating the seminar Dr. D P Biradar Associate Director of Extension, University of Agricultural Sciences Dharwad said that climate change has adversely affected the rainfed farming ecosystem and that farmers need to be equipped with knowledge to address the issues. He further stated that new pests and diseases have evolved due to variations in climate and advocated farmers adopt suitable technologies. Shri C.G. Koravanavar, Chairman of ASF’s Host Institution advised the farmers to adopt the sustainable technologies that would facilitate them to become self-reliant.
Mini Seminar on “Sustainable Agriculture Technologies”, “Horticultural Technologies”, “Value Addition in Agriculture”, “Dairy Technology” and “Drudgery Reduction Technologies” were organized during the week-long celebration. Dr. S M Mantur, Dr. H B Babalad, and Dr. Bharati Chimmad, all Scientists from University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad participated as Resource Persons.

Programs

Livelihood Improvement

Development objective: Livelihood improvement of small and marginal land holding farm families through watershed development.
Target Area: Watershed villages in Gadag district
Target Group: Small and marginal land holding families
Immediate objective: Increase the family income of 20000 small and marginal farmers from Rs.30,000 to Rs.80,000 per annum.

Activities:
Planning of soil and water conservation measures in farmers’ fields.
Training of farmers on soil and water conservation
Training of farmers on sustainable agricultural technology
Introduction of high yielding varieties and crops
Provision of credit to farmers

Output:
Farmers have actively participated in adopting soil and water conservation technologies in about 1.25 lakh ha.
There is Increased crop productivity of 25-35 percent in Greengram, Groundnut, Sunflower, Onion, Cotton and Rabi Jowar
Area under Double cropping has been increased by 35% .

Outcome:
Increased crop productivity due to increased soil moisture availability
Area under double cropping system increased
Migration to distant places reduced as employment opportunities were increased
